Rec Hockey League

Welcome to the EFHL Recreation League (Rec League) Home Page!

We are hoping to offer U11 and U13 again for the 2024-25 season.  Keep an eye on this page for updates.

Introducing the exciting new EFHL Recreational Hockey League! Get ready for a program that offers a more relaxed and flexible experience, focusing on active participation, pure enjoyment, and the opportunity to make new friends. This league builds upon the principles of the previous Recreational League managed by Hockey Edmonton but with expanded age groups and the inclusion of all neighbouring Minor Hockey Associations.

The Rec Hockey League provides a refreshing non-body checking alternative to the traditional mainstream hockey model. While body contact is allowed, it follows the same guidelines as U9, U11, U13, and Female divisions, resembling the non-body checking tiers of the competitive divisions in the EFHL. Additionally, there are no practices, just games.

Join us for a fantastic time on the ice, where having fun and building connections are top priorities. It's all about embracing the joy of the game in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

There are five age categories:  U11, U13, U15, U18, and U21. Registration is open to all players in the Edmonton area, including all Districts, Operating Areas, and KC Parishes. So if you're in the YEG neighborhood, you're invited to join us! If you live in a community outside Edmonton, scroll down for details on how to enroll with your Minor Hockey Association.

>> Registration is closed at this time. We are hoping to open registration in June.

  • Just a quick heads-up, our Rec League games are played on indoor ice surfaces and arenas. However, as a recreational league, we fall under Pond Hockey and Outdoor Hockey with Hockey Canada's Spordle registration system.

The registration fee has yet to be set for 2024-25.  It covers all the fantastic experiences awaiting your child in our league.

Important note: If your child has played organized hockey before in the city of Edmonton, please reach out to Hockey Edmonton at office@hockeyedmonton.ca with their name and birthdate. Hockey Edmonton will assist with the transfer process, ensuring a seamless registration for your child. Once the transfer is completed, the player can register in Spordle using the registration link above.

Are you new to hockey and ready to obtain a Hockey Canada number for your player? Here are the steps:

  1. One parent/guardian must complete the Respect in Sport (RIS) Parent Course HERE. RIS is an hour-long course that costs $12.50. Upon completion of the course, a Hockey Canada number for your child will be generated. When adding your child to the course, select Hockey Edmonton as the association. The RIS course must show up on your child's Hockey Canada record before they can be added to a team.

  2. Create a new account with Spordle HERE. Once you have an account, add your player to it.

  3. After adding your player, you'll be able to register them directly through the Spordle Dashboard. You can also link other related members within your account (via 'Link a Member' feature). Simply search players and coaches by name and date of birth to locate and select.

During registration, you'll have to upload a copy of your child's birth certificate and a Proof of Residency (current utility bill like EPCOR or Direct Energy bill).

Now, onto the exciting part—registration! Once you've added your participants to your account, click on "Rec Hockey League Online Registration" to get started. If you're no longer in Spordle, simply click on the age division that you wish to register for.

Registration for U9:

Hockey Edmonton will not be accepting registrations for U9 players who reside in Edmonton.  We apologize that we are unable to host U9 teams due to the low registration.

Now, if your child is new to hockey or doesn't have the basic skating skills and knowledge of the on-ice game, we have an awesome alternative for U9 players. Check out our Learn to Play Hockey Sessions by visiting this webpage. It's a fantastic option for building essential skills. The Rec Hockey League is not a learn to skate program, so knowing the basics of skating and hockey knowledge first is essential to be able to maximize your experience!

For those living in Edmonton, here are the associations that accepted registrations for the 2023-24 Rec Hockey program:

  • Southwest Zone Hockey: Accepting U15, U18, and U21 players living south of the river, as well as Knights of Columbus players. Registrar: Ardis - SWZAdmin@telus.net

  • Northwest Zone Hockey: Accepting U15, U18, and U21 players living north of the river. Registrar: Lorraine - admin@nwzhockey.ca

For those living outside Edmonton, check out the association that applies to you:

  • St. Albert Minor Hockey: Accepting U11 to U18 players. Registrar: Seema - registrar@samha.ca

  • Strathcona Minor Hockey: Accepting U13 to U21 players. Registrar: Natalie - registrar.smha@gmail.com

  • Sherwood Park Minor Hockey: Accepting players of all ages and divisions (U11 - U21). Registrar: Lesley - admin@spmha.ab.ca

Do you want to coach or be a team manager with Rec Hockey?

Rec league teams need coaches.  Its an easy gig! Rec league coaches need to have RESPECT IN SPORT - ACTIVITY LEADER and Hockey Edmonton will reimburse you for the cost of RIS - AL upon completion and submission of certificate. As a HC, you are responsible for the team and the equipment. But unlike community or elite hockey, there are no practices to plan, no tournaments or playoffs to prepare for, just ensuring the team has fun! Rec teams need a Head Coach and up to 4 assistant coaches. Coaches will need to pay the refs, but again, we will reimburse you monthly for the ref fees!

Team Managers will be responsible for game sheets and game sheet management.

If you are interested, once registration opens, email the office for more information.

Regarding registration and refund policies:

Please email office@hockeyedmonton.ca if you need to withdraw from a camp or program.

Refunds will be processed according to the following guidelines:

  • Prior to the program starting: A refund, minus a $50.00 administrative fee, will be issued if the cancellation request is received up to 48 hours before the first session (72 hours for programs starting on a Monday that is a Statutory Holiday). No refunds will be issued for requests received less than 48 hours from the start.
  • During a multi-session program: Valid refunds will be prorated based on the time the participant was in the program and will be subject to the $50.00 administrative fee.
  • Transfers: Each request to transfer from one session to another will incur a $50.00 administrative fee.
  • Online programs: No refunds will be issued for online programs offered by or through Hockey Edmonton.
  • Hockey Edmonton cancellations: If Hockey Edmonton cancels a camp, event, or program, participants will receive a full refund.

Before registering, we encourage all parents and players to review the Player Waiver, Financial Assistance Options, EFHL Rec League Rules, and FAQs.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to office@hockeyedmonton.ca. We're here to help!

Join EFHL's Rec League and experience the fun of recreational hockey.
