REGISTER TO PLAY MINOR HOCKEY
You want to play on a team? GREAT! Now what? Minor hockey within the City of Edmonton isn’t as simple as playing wherever you want with one central registration system, so we’ve broken down the steps on how to navigate registration and help you decide which stream of hockey is best for your child in this guide below.
1. How old is your child?
First, let’s confirm how old your child is as of December 31, 2023 to determine their age division for the 2023-24 season. It is important to note that the December 31 age cut-off is a firm date; no exceptions to play within a different age category can be made.
2. Determine what level ideally you would like to try out for
Are you interested in recreational/community hockey (playing mostly for fun to spend time with your friends at A-level), or elite hockey (more serious competition and time commitment at the AA and AAA-levels for kids age 11+).
3. Play where you live
Next, based on your home address, you will need to register within your designated boundary. To find the club or district you belong to, follow these steps:
- Click here to view Edmonton’s interactive boundary map to determine where you will need to register. Locate your home address, and make note of which district/association (community hockey) or athletic club (elite hockey) you belong to.
- Make sure all the options on the left side are toggled OFF to begin.
- For community hockey boundaries, select the box next to: FEDERATION HOCKEY BOUNDARIES, or KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BOUNDARIES to register with a parish.
- For Elite hockey boundaries, select the box next to: HOCKEY EDMONTON ELITE BOUNDARIES
- For an all-girls option, select the box next to: EdmontonGirls (for community hockey through the Edmonton Girls Hockey Association - EGHA) OR the box next to: Edmonton Elite Girls Hockey (Elite hockey through the Edmonton Female Athletic Club). If you reside in the boundary for Southwest Zone, you have the option of their all-girls program for girls ages U9 to U15. (Please note: Edmonton Female Hockey Alliance has not yet been added into the boundary map; however, it is available city-wide for girls).

Registration
- I have never registered for minor hockey in Edmonton before. What do I do?
- Before registering, contact the registrar in your boundary with your child’s name and birth date.
- A copy of your child’s birth certificate or passport will need to be uploaded to your Spordle account, or provided directly to your registrar.
- Attain your Respect in Sport
- Complete the Hockey Alberta Parent Declaration form (which includes providing proof of residency by way of a recent utility bill).
- What is Spordle? How to do I use it?
- Spordle is Hockey Canada’s registration system. Create a Spordle account in a parent’s name. Once all participants have been added to the Spordle account, you will be able to register with your Association/District/Club through the Spordle Dashboard.
- When are tryouts, and what do I need to know before I tryout?
- Tryouts dates vary based on age divisions and which Association/District/Club you are trying out with. Generally speaking, tryouts will begin in early September. You will need to register to tryout based on your District. The registrar in your Association/District/Club will be able to assist you with the details.
- Can I play with a District or Club outside of my boundary?
- The easy answer is “no”. However, some exceptions can be granted under certain circumstances. Our player movement process closes on May 31, 2023 for the upcoming 2023-24 season. For questions, please contact Hockey Edmonton’s registrar, Glenn Sommerville at sommerville@hockeyedmonton.ca.
