Skating is the most important technical skill of skating, puckhandling, passing, and shooting. Skating is the foundation which puckhandling, passing, and shooting are built upon. Athletes, regardless of their ability level or hockey goals, will have a better experience in hockey if they have strong technicial skill levels. Although it is not required for athletes to learn to skate before they can register for hockey, being able to skate certainly makes learning puckhandling, passing, and shooting that much easier.
Skate Canada's CanSkate program is a dynamic learn to skate program that focuses on fun, participation and basic skill development. Based on Sport Canada's long term athlete development (LTAD) principles, CanSkate centers on physical literacy and the fundamental skills needed to take part in any ice sport or to skate as a recreational activity. It was designed for beginners of all ages, children or adults, as well as for those wishing to improve their basic skills whether their focus be for figure skating, hockey, speed skating or just skating for fun.
